International Wood Architecture Conference 2017
International Wood Architecture Conference in Tallinn brings together top architects and engineers from around the world who have stood out with innovative use of wood in their works. For the second consecutive year they asked us to make the brand – including logo, colors, typefaces, web – for the event.
This year the conferece took place for the eleventh consecutive year and is organised by Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association in cooperation with the Estonian Association of Architects and Estonian Association of Civil Engineers.
Solution
Using wood is a challenge to both, architects and engineers. To cope with our brand challenge we created three key visuals for the conference. The black lines represent the lines we can see inside trees and eleven lines represent the age of the conference. The gradient shapes behind the lines is a piece that we took over from the previous year where the concept was to show basic wooden shapes, shapes that can be used to build anything and that symbolise the flexibility of wood. The key element in the brand became obvious after we created the logo and saw an opportunity to bring together the lines between the „p“ and „k“ which created a key symbol. The conference’s slogan is „Wood – Nature’s key to a better living environment“ so having the key as one of the symbols for the conference was perfect.
Materials
The International Wood Architecture Conference 2017 brand has a light and natural wooden-like color mixed with bright orange and black. The typeface used for the brand is GT Eesti. In terms of different mediums, the usage of shapes gave us a lot of playing room with the designs, the brand is very flexible as is wood itself.
It was also important for us to only use sustainable printing materials for this project so all the paper used for the conference was uncoated and natural.
The Annual Wood Architecture Award ceremony takes place during the International Wood Architecture Conference. For that we also made a poster series with all the contestants which was shown at the conference.
